Good for dries, though cooler weather means start later in a.m. Ants, hopppers, dry stones, big dries. Nymphing with lightning bugs, buggers. Mud plug dissipating. 3300 CFS (vs. 2700 avg).

Dries best. Caddis, hoppers, mayflies. Conehead buggers, stones. From Montana's Best: "80 fish days aren’t out of the question...the toughest part is navigating around the huge Bison herds". 3800 CFS (vs 2900 avg).

8/23 -- EXCELLENT

Prime time. Dries -- stones, hoppers, ants. Nymphs (slower): lighning bugs, stones, zonkers, buggers, crayfish. Streamers early, late. "Fish are everywhere" in the river. 4000 CFS (from 5500 a week ago, and 3000 avg).

8/19 -- EXCELLENT

"The Yellowstone is fishing so good it’s almost silly" (Montana's Best). "Walter had a pair of clients land roughly 75 in the the upper portion of the canyon a few days ago" (Parks Fly Shop). Big nymphs, big dries, wooly buggers, hoppers... Now below 5000 CFS.

8/16 -- VERY GOOD

Down to 5500 CFS (from 7500 a week ago). Hoppers galore. Plus big nymphs, caddis, streamers.

Stones, hoppers, copper johns, buggers, sj worms, streamers. Down to 6500 CFS.

Down to 7500 CFS (vs 3800 avg), still off-color. Nymphing (stones, beadhead caddis) and streamers best, but dries coming on. Crowds thinning out.

Fishable with 2-3 feet visibility. Inconsistent, but "some pigs are being caught" (Trout Wranglers -- below). Mostly deep, tight nymphing. Girdle bugs, streamers, stones. Fish close to the banks. Prepare to get stuck in the willows: "no guts, no glory" (Montana's Best -- below).
