10/26 -- GOOD

"with all the Salmon spawning the trout and Steelhead are going for all the eggs floating out of the nests. This is great for the fly fishing which we are starting now. A single egg pattern is great this time of year and should be good for awhile. The weather is changing now also, winter is here. The mornings are cold and the days are warm with a few days of rain and snow in the mountains."  From Kiene's: "this recent bout of rain has risen the river. However, it is definitely not blown by any means."  "There and 1000s of dark salmon now spawning in the upper Klamath and while they provide action they are not fit for the table. What they do provide is food or eggs for steelhead and in turn easy targets for steelhead. Guide Wally Johnson who lives riverside in the Seiad Valley reports there are several pairs of spawning salmon in every riffle on his property and 100s more up and down the river. Wally is NOT targeting salmon but the egg thieving, hard fighting more than willing to bite steelies. These upper Klamath steelhead are not big (most average 2 to 5 pounds and an 8 pounder is something to brag about) but are very feisty native fish that are always willing to bite. Most are now keying on roe but flies, spoons and spinners can also be effective. This steelie bite will last into December, possibly longer depending on rainfall river flows and temps."

10/19 -- FAIR

"Steelhead are on the move, heading towards the upper Klamath. Good reports should happen any day on the upper Klamath. Anglers fishing down in Seiad Valley are into steelhead and salmon. fishing is good one day, tough the next. All reports say there are "lots" of steelhead moving up river!! Awesome!"  "upper Klamath is stuffed with spawning salmon and steelie counts are big and the run is ahead of schedule. Wally was not out today but a good friend reported 10 adult steelhead running 4 to 7 pounds and a "bunch" of half pounders."  "I have not seen to many Steelhead yet but should start seeing them soon. Hopefully the Steelhead fishing is as good as the Salmon has been this year. Hope to see you on the river."

10/12 -- GOOD

"Fishing is fair to good. Lower river is congested with salmon fisherman. Best reports are coming from Weitchpec to Somes Bar where there are good numbers of half pounders mixed in with some of the biggest adult steelhead we have seen for years. Small assassins, herniators, green butt skunks swung on a floating line with a long leader are catching fish in the morning and evening. On sunny days, switch to a sink tip during the heat of the day."  "We continue to hear the good reports coming out of the lower Klamath, near Happy Camp. The steelhead fishing has been good. It's too early to promise good steelhead fishing near Iron Gate dam."

9/28 -- GOOD

"It is now time for Klamath and Trinity River steelhead. It looks to be a good fall season for both salmon and steelhead with some nice fish already taking dries on the Klamath system."  From Kiene's: "I spent last week up on the Klamath, Orleans area, I must of caught around 30 half pounders and one adult that broke off."  "Water conditions were warming, but some trout and small steelhead were still being caught on ...streamers swung on fly rods."

9/21 -- VERY GOOD

Heard on Kiene's regarding last week: "Got around 20 half-pounders (15-20"); a couple 20"+; and a 28" chromer hen that ripped off 100yds of line in the blink of an eye."  9/15: "More good reports coming in from anglers fishing the Klamath down near Klamath Glen. Seems like this pulse of cool water from the Trinity river is working wonders for the fishing. The salmon and steelhead fishing has been great."

9/14 -- GOOD

From 9/8: "For steelhead in the upper river, near Hornbrook, Ca. it's too early to go, but not too early to start planning your winter steelhead trip."  "Halfpounder steelhead are entering the river now, and fly fishers are doing well swinging streamers and dead-drifting nymphs."

9/7 -- FAIR

"For steelhead in the upper river, near Hornbrook, Ca. it's too early to go, but not too early to start planning your winter steelhead trip."  "sprinkling of steelies both adult and increasing numbers of half pounders."

8/31 -- GOOD

"Steelheading continued to be good as well, at least early in the morning from the mouth to Blue Creek."  "Cool water temperatures are moving good numbers of salmon and half pound steelhead up the Klamath and the Trinity River.  Look for adult steelhead to start showing up in coming weeks."

8/24 -- GOOD

"fishing for steelhead continued to be good, too, although it’s been an early morning bite, turning off after a couple of hours as the sun rises higher in the sky.  Steelhead fishing has been good on the Klamath River, with some jack salmon moving in, too. "Out best day was Thursday with 12 adult steelhead and one hatchery steelie weighing in at 11 pounds," said guide Steve Huber."

8/16 -- FAIR

"Not too much happening on the upper Klamath. It's just way to hot out! But lower in the river the salmon fishing has been good one day, tough the next. Look for river flows to increase in an effort to avert the warm water fish kill of 2001. There are a zillion salmon all ready to move up river. This could be one epic steelhead season coming up!

8/3 -- GOOD

"The steelhead fishing way down near Klamath Glen has turned on. Expect to find chrome in the 4lb class with some going over 5lbs. Smaller King Salmon are in as well. The fishing can be great one day, then nothing the next. Look for the fishing in the upper river, around Hornbrook, CA., to pick up mid October."  "The summer run adult steelies are making a big showing in the lower Klamath. Steve Huber reported on Tuesday 7-31 his group of five boated 9 adult steelies, two jacks and one adult salmon and lost many others along the way. Steve says the steelies are the "main attraction" right now with most running 5 to 8 and up to 14 pounds."

7/26 -- GOOD

"We are presently catching steelhead and salmon while drifting up river. Due to the great ocean fishing presently occurring, the fishing pressure on the river remains light."  "Steelhead fishing has really taken off, according to Guide Steve Huber. He recommends starting at Starwin or Blake’s riffles and heading up to Cleveland and Blue Creek."

7/20 -- GOOD

"Fishing for steelhead, both halfpounders, and adults to about 6 pounds, continued to improve."  "On Saturday 7-14 Steve Huber reports that the lower Klamath is seeing consistent summer steelie action with lots of adult fish in the 5 to 12 pound class making up the bulk of the catch. While steelhead are the big attraction right now with most guides seeing 5 to 10 fish apiece there are still pulses of spring kings moving through the lower river."

7/13 -- FAIR

No new reports.  Flows almost constant in the last week.

7/6 -- GOOD

"the summer run of steelies started to show in late June which is early and early fish often means a strong run. The early run of steelies usually peaks in mid to late July with fish running from 5 to 10 and up to 15 pounds."

6/29 -- GOOD

"Trout fishing has been quite good in the upper reaches of the Klamath River below Iron Gate Dam, according to Scott Caldwell of SC Guide Service."   Also read Kiene's discussion about catching trout/smolt.

6/21 -- GOOD

"The Salmon fly and stone fly were great this year and the fishing was also. The last few days I fished there I was averaging 50 fish landed each day, the last day which was this last friday was the best. We landed 91 trout."  "Steelies are already showing on the lower Klamath (about three weeks early) and is a great indication of a solid steelie run."

6/15 -- FAIR

"The Klamath has been fishing fair. Good hatches of Golden Stones and Salmon flies are occurring. Mostly smaller 6-12" rainbows chasing these big flies."  Some spring salmon appearing.

6/9 -- GOOD

"The Salmon and Stone fly hatch are coming along great. There are a lot of bugs out and the fish are starting to eat. I have not gotten a lot of big fish yet but a lot of the smaller fish are coming to the suface. Most the fish have been 6 to 10 inches but I do have a few over 15 inches."

6/1 -- FAIR

"The famous Klamath River is fishing fair for resident rainbows and a few juvenile steelhead. The Salmon flies are coming off a little. We just need a little warmer weather to really kick start the Salmon Fly Hatch."   "Yesterday the couple I had with me landed one native steelhead and two salmon (see pics and video clip below)."
