Hex fading. "Second season" now (Gates). Smaller bugs in a.m. and p.m.: BWO's, cahills, tricos, terrestrials.

Hexathon continues -- longer than usual due to ideal weather. May last 5 more days. Almost too many bugs to fish. Use bigger patterns.

7/1 -- EXCELLENT

"Hex and Iso's are still at center stage." (Au Sable Angler). Fish "rising around the clock" (Gates) to various hatches: hex, olives, sulfurs, caddis, isonychia, various stones. The reports below are must reads -- as good as any professional fiction you'll read. See the bat picture from Gates.

Sunday: "Peak Of The Hex Hatch Is Here On The Au Sable River!" (below). Tapering on the lower river. Follow the hatch up the river.

6/24 -- VERY GOOD

Midnight madness continues, though hex's struggling to get their act together(Gates) -- or, "8 nights of heavy hatches" (Streamside) -- you decide. Isonychias, sulfurs, "big riffles have been boiling with bugs" (Gates). Cool spring good for lower river. Weekend has rain in forecast, which could disrupt hex.

6/21 -- EXCELLENT

Nocturnal excellence. The dark poetry of fly fishing. Big hatches with hex moving into the upper river. Plus brown drakes, isonychia. Best fishing 9pm to 3am. Streamers so-so during day. Lack of reports due to night fishing fever?

6/17 -- EXCELLENT

"Night Time Dry Fly Fishing Has Started In The Big Waters Of Au Sable River! ...the big mayflies of June!" (Streamside, below). The "June potpourri of bugs" (Gates, below): brown drakes, isonychia, some hex ramping up. 9pm - 1am or 3am, depending how nuts you really are. This is where the men separate from the boys.

6/13 -- GOOD

No reports since 6/9. Maybe everyone's catching up on sleep after the epic drake action. "Good" rating is a guess -- call ahead, as the flows have been a little erratic since 6/9.

6/10 -- EXCELLENT

Great fishing for a "drake junkie" (see gates lodge below for a fine piece of writing). Isonychias = big boys in the evening. Sounds like clusters of dinosaur-sized flies taking over the river. READ GATES PIECE BELOW -- hall of fame fishing report. If you don't end up on the river, perhaps you should take up crochet.

Sulfurs. Great conditions on trophy waters. "You can’t ask for better conditions" (see link below).

Forecasted meteorological nastiness did not occur. Sulfurs, march browns, caddis, yellow stones, BWO's, small streamers -- brown drakes possible this weekend ("so far they exist as faint but confirmed rumors in the warmer reaches" -- gates lodge -- see below).

Fickle weather, yet good water conditions (though muddy after thunderstorms). Sulfurs, drakes, caddis, stones and streamers. Menu of insects somewhat weather-dependent.

5/24 -- FAIR

Flows dropping, river more fishable, surface activity picking up. Hendricksons waning and sulfurs picking up. Several other hatches as well, including BWO's, stones and caddis. Streamers also effective when rain increases flows.

Flows getting back closer to normal, though still somewhat high. Most areas wadeable. Weather has been changeable, affecting the fishing. Good weather will improve fishing. Some spinnerfalls in the evening, plus caddis and mayfly hatches midday. Stones and streamers, too.

5/18 -- FAIR

Water levels coming down and clarity improving after last week's rain. Best fishing is with streamers. Limited surface activity. Look for Hendricksons this week as conditions improve.
